India's capital Awakens to Toxic Haze Following Celebrations
As Tuesday dawned citizens of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves inhaling extremely polluted air that was classified as the "severe" range.
Alarming Air Quality Levels
Various sections of the city registered an pollution measurement above 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the safe limit established by the global health authority.
In some locations, concentrations of toxic particulate matter hit highs of 1800, equating to fifteen to twenty times above acceptable limits.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and New Changes
Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during Diwali due to their significant contribution to the dangerous pollution that engulfs the city as winter approaches.
Yet in recent months, the current city government appealed to the supreme court to seek a easing of the restrictions.
Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – which have been criticized by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent less polluting – as a compromise between "cultural practices and public health".
Legal Decision and Implementation
Despite concerns of public health and environmental campaigners, judicial authorities agreed to the request, stipulating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during limited time windows throughout the festival.
On Monday night, there was considerable violation of the regulated periods across the capital, with insufficient regulation regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the supposedly greener variety.
Many monitoring devices throughout the city showed pollution reaching highest levels around midnight to some of the worst readings recorded during the festival in at least three years.
International Effects
The widespread use of fireworks during the festival also sparked a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with officials in Pakistani Punjab pointing to deteriorating air quality in their urban centers on pollutants originating in across the border following the festivities.
Long-Standing Environmental Crisis
The dangerously high concentrations of pollution in the capital have persisted as a significant problem for more than 15 years, with the condition continuing to worsen.
During Diwali, the amount of hazardous particles in the air has been observed to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the peak levels ever measured in the Chinese city, which was once viewed as the world's most polluted urban center.
Multiple Pollution Contributors
The problem in Delhi is attributed to a mix of various sources including transportation pollution, airborne particles, development work, waste incineration and haze from farm burning in neighbouring areas of farming communities.
Throughout these areas, farmers illegally ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, creating toxic pollution that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as cooler air sets in.
Health and Financial Impact
Both financial and medical consequences on the roughly thirty-three million inhabitants living in the Delhi area is enormous, according to various investigations.
This pollution leads to high levels of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory diseases, and can result in malignancies.
Environmental contamination is calculated to be causing 10,000 untimely deaths annually in the capital.
