Viral video clips seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, though he insists he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a decisive win.
“That was unfortunate. It was essentially an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a large group of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “The action was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”
League Context for Proprietor Penalties
This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous examples involve:
- Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
